42. Adrastus answered, "Except for your request, Oh! king, I would rather have kept away from this hunt. For I think it ill becomes a man under a misfortune such as mine to consort with his happier compeers. And besides, I have no heart to it. On many grounds I would stay behind. But, as you urge it, and I am bound to pleasure you (for truly it does behoove me to requite your good offices), I am content to do as you wish. For your son, whom you give into my charge, be sure you shall receive him back safe and sound, so far as depends upon a guardian's carefulness.
