The Histories of Herodotus. Introduction.
Herodotus was a Greek historian of the fifth century BC, one of the earliest, and generally considered the father of Greek history. His Histories is a monumental work. Ostensibly a history of the great war between the Greeks and the Persians, a war which defined Herodotus' times the same way World War II defines the 20th century, it becomes a complete history of the world as the ancient Greeks knew it. There are fascinating and extensive digressions on the Egyptians, the Babylonians the Scythians and virtually all the important peoples and places of the ancient world. Herodotus is endlessly fascinated by people and their foibles, and allows the reader to share his fascination and amusement.
