Shu Ching, or the Book of History. Title card. The Shu Ching has also been referred to as the Book of History, the History Classic, and the Book of Documents. These are archaic records, some of the oldest in the world. They were compiled during the Chou dynasty, and discuss both historical events as well as events reaching back into China's legendary past, especially the legendary emperors, Yao and Shun.

This book contains selections from the standard English translation of the Shu Ching or the Book of History by the great Sinologist James Legge. It was originally prepared for the Sacred Books of the East series, published during the nineteenth century under the general editorship of Max Muller.

This edition is of the basic text only. It still needs a great deal of work in transcribing the Chinese terms, which are not consistently applied. A more modern (but still outdated) style is used in the hexagrams themselves, while Dr. Legge's original, quite archaic method is used in the treatises and appendices. Future editions will hopefully incorporate actual Chinese characters using Apple's WorldScript, as well as the use the current system for transcribing Chinese. It will also contain illustrations of each hexagram.
